Review of The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) by Todd Newman — 23 Apr 2009
This is, in my opinion, by far the best western Eastwood had to offer up to that point. I really don't consider it to be a true western, sure it had six-shooters, cowboy hats, horseback riding and indians, but to me it was really a portrait of a man who was on the losing side of a bloody war, unsure of what to do with himself.
Atruly great performance given that he also directed. It also is one of the first times you see an indian portrayed as something other than a sub-human savage scalping the heads of "innocent" whitemen and circling the wagon train with a bow and arrow.
It contains some of my all-time favorite dialogue, and I just love how he spits on everymanner of creature(carpet baggers, dead men, dogs, and bugs)" Well there mister carpetbagger, this here's what we call.
..a Missourah boat ride".
