Review of The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) by Rod A — 15 Feb 2010
Eastwood is the same character in every film. I can't recall one performance where he's not been that stoic, fair-minded, defender of justice. I always enjoy that character. There is definitely something satisfying about seeing him clean the bad guy's clocks.
I found High Plains Drifter to be much more creative than this particular film. Josey Wales boasts a new depiction of the Native American characters. That is very refreshing. The thing about Eastwood as a director is that he's going to tell the story his way and he definitely doesn't give in to the typical conventions of the Western.
He's not preachy; he just wants to tell the story as correctly as he can. As one watches the film, one senses that Eastwood is tremendously invested in every shot, every costume, every pregnant pause.
He's not going for the most obvious path but, in the end, he's still sticking it to the bad guys in an extremely entertaining manner.
