Review of The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) by Ivan D — 13 Apr 2010
What separates this great western film from others is the eponymous protagonist's main yearning: It is not merely just vengeance, but along the way, also to help people in an Exodus-like journey for a new life.
Clint Eastwood, widely known always as the mysterious gunslinger with a dark past, breathes life with a beating heart as Josey Wales, maybe the noblest character in Eastwood's Western roles. And although Wale's enemies were usually no match to his gun prowess, he is very vulnerable to one thing: Emotion.
His journey for a better life was very compelling and believable that I usually forgot about the Union soldiers chasing him, as if blurring his notion for revenge and transforming it into camaraderie.
Although Josey Wales killed many people along the way, he has able to establish life amidst the wilderness of the west, and sacrifice everything for the sake of his new found friends and home. One of Eastwood's best performances in the genre, his most sincere, and most human, with his role in "Unforgiven" in close second.
