Review of The Other Woman (2014) by John M — 08 Jul 2014
Not the worst rom-com out there, but this definitely serves as a reminder on why this is one of my least favorite genres. So when a husband (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is discovered to be two-timing, instead of warring with each other, the girlfriend (Cameron Diaz) and the wife (Leslie Mann) decide to team up to make him pay.
I watcher the trailer for this and almost gave myself a nosebleed because I rolled my eyes so hard; obviously, this had all the red flags of being something that would irk me as a moviegoer. To the credit of everyone involved, this really wasn't as bad as I imagined, and I'm thankful that it wasn't overly painful.
While it is not offensively bad, it's not particularly funny either, and there is a number of featured elements that made me deduct points. For one thing, the soundtrack to this is nails-on-a-chalkboard bad, which honestly made me drop a whole rating on this.
There's also a dog poop joke and a laxative joke, and this features some humor that feels about 16 years too late. Kate Upton isn't given anything to do, and she just makes the movie feel crowded.
There are a few throwaway lines that are chuckle worthy, but they're outnumbered by all of the gags that don't really go anywhere. I did think that Coster-Waldau (aka Jaime Lannister) did as good as he could have with some pretty lowbrow stuff, but it's not enough to save this.
Sure, this may play better if you are a female and you see this with a gaggle of girls, but guess what, I'm not a wronged 29-year-old single woman, and I didn't care for this.
