Review of The Other Woman (2014) by Derek M — 14 Jul 2014
I think people, maybe women, wanted too much from this film. In absolute fairness, this film begins to send somewhat of an empowering message that gets thrown to the backseat about twenty minutes in. However, this doesn't knock the film down for me, it just takes it in a new direction.
The antics of these three women, all cheated on by the same man, are riotous to say the least. There were some odd casting choices (Coster-Waldau, Minaj, Upton), but Leslie Mann is one of the funniest women working in comedy today and steals nearly every scene, even the ones where she's crying or whining.
On the other hand, Kate Upton cannot and should not act.... ever. There are periods of lulls, usually bookend by some wildly ridiculous scenario that makes you laugh anyway, plausible or not. But there is a sense of originality in the film and even in it's payoffs, which makes it wildly enjoyable and empowering for women to watch, while making it awkward and cringe-worthy for it's male viewers.
