Review of The Other Woman (2014) by Andrea H — 11 Aug 2014
What's this film want to be about exactly?! Leslie Mann (This Is 40), Cameron Diaz (In Her Shoes) and supermodel Kate Upton play wife, mistress and the other mistress of a caddish womanizer-slash-shady businessman played by Nicolaj Coster-Waldau ('Game of Thrones') who is cheating on his wife with mistress number one and cheating on her with mistress number two .
.. all unbeknownst to each of the women. When housewife Kate (Mann) discovers Carly (Diaz) she's so befuddled she doesn't know what to do. After a meltdown, Carly aids the grieving wife as the audience is assured Carly wouldn't ever wreck a marriage making her a victim of the situation as well.
When they discover a third ... well, the more the merrier! The women all bond in their mutual disgust of being used by such a sleaze and plot revenge against him. Sure there are some laughs (some unnecessary) but the film had me scratching my head as it took three women to get even with one man.
It seemed as if the film wanted to be all "girl power" but ... they were actually only strong when together and I think it sends a mixed message. Perhaps I am over-thinking The Other Woman .
.. and that probably isn't hard to do. Mann, Diaz and Coster-Waldeau -- heck ... even Upton -- are all better than this.
