Review of The Other Guys (2010) by Lloyd H — 12 Mar 2013
The Other Guys is an enjoyable parody of buddy cop movies of the past. The dialogue and one liners are classic Adam McKay and Will Ferrell material, stupid, mindless and completely random. Will Ferrell is on top form doing what he does best, simply talking pointless rubbish.
Mark Wahlberg holds his own alongside Ferrell but occasionally struggles to deliver the laughs single handedly. Michael Keaton's understated performance undermines everyone brilliantly and the delivery and timing of his lines is comedy gold.
Why Steve Coogan is in this film baffles me, he was out of place and his involvement just didn't work for me. Cameos from Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson steal the show. Their screen time is minimal but they looked so cool together and the constant cliches and references are crowd pleasers.
Overall The Other Guys is a good comedy and features everything wanted and expected of a McKay/Ferrell collaboration. However it doesn't come close to Anchorman and probably just falls short of Talladega Nights also.
But as a standalone film, The Other Guys is a good comedy and does exactly what it says on the tin by making me laugh every time I watch it.
