Review of The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) by Alexander C — 07 Dec 2012
King Henry VIII: Will you give yourself to me now?
Anne Boleyn: Make me your Queen...
Natalie Portman: Anne Boleyn.
Scarlett Johansson: Mary Boleyn.
Eric Bana: Henry Tudor.
A family become embroiled with gaining more power and wittingly put two Sisters Mary and Anne into the path of the king to secure a future and status.
What do you think of when you think of a powerful historical satire? Elizabeth?, Madness Of King George?, Henry VII?, Shakespeare in love?... whatever you think of, ''The Other Boleyn Girl'' is another to put among them.
TOBG is without a doubt a powerful acted out piece, masterfully executed and I love period historical dramas especially English ones. Eric, Scarlett & Natalie give performances to levels expected of their skills. Another stand out role was David Morrissey as The Duke of Norfolk who gives his character an electrically charged boost and resonance.
Anne and Mary have a distinctive relationship respective of two sisters that shines in their rivalry, and passion to outdo each other yet also their bond as sister's blossoms and Natalie and Scarlett display this wonderfully. At times wonderful versatile Natalie Portman with her Anne Boleyn will have you seething and then others feeling deep remorse for her.
The films situation and scenario is constantly changing adding to the excitement. Music epic and sweeping adding to the film's glowing quality.
Visually stunning, sets and locations unable to fault. Costumes magnificent. The green dress that Anne wheres is a feast for the eyeballs. Both leading ladies are exquisite in looks and posture.
Henry VIII depicted by Eric Bana really is played well showing what a bastard Henry was towards women and his constant obsession for a son, a son to succeed him, an heir...
I love the irony of the film, the history and the refreshing feel it gives to this chapter of the past.
The last scene showing how a girl, a woman, not a man would rule in the future for 45 years...and we all know who that Queen is.
An amazing period historical piece with depth and flair.
