Review of The Orphanage (2007) by Christos V — 04 Jan 2012
The Orphanage, it's one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. This is a Spanish horror film that manages to transcend the genre. And, on top of that, it's more intelligently made and doesn't insult the audience with cheap thrills or manipulation.
There was nothing about this film I didn't like. The acting, the thrills, the cinematography, the story, and the atmosphere. Everything was not short of sheer brilliance.Technically, the film is masterwork.
The lead actress of this movie is perhaps the second largest revelation from this movie. Belen Rueda plays the lead, Laura. The mother who takes over the orphanage and whom these creepy events start to unfold around.
Laura is a truly realistic character, and that is something very refreshing. There is much to praise in a movie that defies conventions because it is so beautifully made, here is a movie that gives a new twist to a genre that many consider creatively dead, as we have grown accustomed to expect very little from a new wave of directors that rely too heavily on CGI and sketchy screenplays, and an over-dependency on sequels and tired ideas.
On the other hand, "The Orphanage" explores the emotional impact of tragic events on human beings, and the importance of family bonds. The orphanage is a real horror movie!!
