Although excessively similar to Spanish films The Others(2001) and Pan's Labyrinth(2006), Orphanage has builds up it's creepy atmosphere and terrors devoid of CGI. It's well directed and is often confusing and the direction sometimes leaves things without much clarity. Belen Rueda gives a good performance and the scenes involving Geraldine Chaplin are the best ones in the film, it's a pity that the film did not have more of those towards the end. It also gives too much emphasis on the mother-child melodrama rather than concentrating on other plot devices.
