Review of The Orphanage (2007) by Becca P — 16 Aug 2010
While most horror films go through great pains to find cheaper, more modern ways to scare audiences, this one hearkens back to older thrillers that relied on scaring people with suspense and tension.
The film carries along with appropriate creepiness, but the real kicker here is in how they play with your expectations of how the story will develop. When the protagonist finds out what happened to her son, you can feel any number of things, but it's hard not to be surprised. Given most horror films these days, that's a feat in itself.
