Review of The Orphanage (2007) by Julie N — 11 Oct 2010
It wasn't scary, but a bit clumsy considering the end - I would have torn the house apart if I had lost my child (and she had so many clues to where he was........). All in all, I was not surprised by the story build-up, plot and certainly not the end.
On the other hand, it was heartfelt and apparently I was all too ready to believe in ghosts in this film's universe, therefore, somehow, the spooky part never really got to me. Not even the categorical "jolt" moments that should be the cause of frights got me jumping.
I mostly prefer European horror/thriller movies because dominantly these movies tend to go beyond gore and instant fright moments and produce something meaningful. Therefore, I get and respect the depth and stronger impact that originate from the underplayed and untold (or the uncanny - thank you, Joseph Conrad ;o). The key is letting the audience do their own thinking and filling out the holes.
