Review of The Orphanage (2007) by Eeva H — 13 Oct 2010
A cautionary tale about being an overprotective parent on the surface. Human error is indeed more frightening than the wrath of God or turn of fate. Despite this movie being in another language, you would not be able to look away.
Juan Antonio Bayona captures fear, the otherworld and sadness like a genius encapsulating his emotion in one gasp. Brilliant acting from everyone especially the seer played by Geraldine Chaplin and the el bambino played by Roger Proncep.
The twist in the end makes you realize that maybe death is something you shouldn't fear, something to look forward to, just another adventure. I applaud Ms. Rueda for capturing the grief that drives a parent almost into insanity.
