Review of The Orphanage (2007) by Jenna R — 12 Jun 2011
An excellent, menacing wonder tale.
This Spanish film is genuinely creepy, chilling and intriguing. The ominous story is clever, the acting faultless and it looks beautiful. This is all you would expect from Guillermo del Toro, who produces here, the director of the equally wonderful, and more visual Pan's Labyrinth.
The believable story is about a couple who adopt a child, and go to live in an old Orphanage, where the lady was raised. The boy has imaginary friends and then goes missing. A gruesome fact is uncovered - can they find him in time?.
Intelligent and inauspicious. A superb movie, with subtle tension, chills and underlying horror thrills. The quality of this film is in the idea, the cleverness of the non obvious ill feeling and the exceptional delivery and overall look.
