Possibly the most professionally made modern horror I've seen, The Orphanage/El Orfanato comes with none of the niggles (mediocre actors trying in vain to save a dire script, a director who doesn't know how to work with a low budget, etc.) usually associated with horror, and manages to make a slow-burning, emotionally raw experience that is truly haunting, while also forcing the audience, not only to keep guessing, but to question what they would do in the protagonist's shoes.
This Spanish horror film is a testament to the idea that money cannot buy you everything, in that it seems to be more successful than any American production, big or small, in a long time.
