Review of The Original Kings of Comedy (2000) by Kieran M — 15 Jan 2009

I thought all the in-between footage was done pretty well and wished they'd done more of those mini-vignettes of the NC fans--those were nice inna Spike Lee style. The behind-the-scenes bits were some of my favorite parts and really helped set the mood for a tour video. I think it's safe to say that most of us would have fun BSing with those guys (RIP Bernie Mac). They're good entertainers (alright--Hughley's just OK) in general.

All that said, watching this Def Jam comedy from 2000 in 2009 was never going to be as funny as if I'd seen this when it first came out. I think that, for everyone except Hughley (just not that funny), it has to do with many, MANY weaker comedians impersonating these guys material and style in the time since. Just about all of the humor is 'White people do THIS, but black people do THAT--which is fine. Thing is, it unfairly got played out over almost a decade of lesser comedians ripping off one or all of these guys. Anyway, not bad in and of itself, but not the funniest stand-up you'll watch in 09.
