Review of The Order of Myths (2008) by Andrew M — 27 Jul 2008
A missed opportunity on the level of Eternal Sunshine. it's so frustrating to watch a movie that is so close to the verge of greatness, but instead screws it up in the most obviously dumb way. While Eternal Sunshine would have had a great payoff if it hadn't mucked up the suspense by giving away the ending in the first 10 mins, this movie has a careful slow burn, some of the best tension simmering I've ever seen actually, with no payoff.
It's like the pot was about to boil over and the director just walks up and kills the heat. You have the sense that she was starting to be less guarded with the interview subjects at the end, but afraid to press further maybe.
That would be fine for some subjects, but this is about a segregated Mardi Gras for fucks sake. You can only sidestep so much. All the same, this movie's pretty good, probably the greatest thing out of Alabama since the Mini Mall guy.
