Review of The Oranges (2011) by David G — 30 Sep 2012
While humorous in places and despite well defined characters, the story doesn't really end up anywhere. It's told through Vanessa's eyes but it seems to be more about her dad and her best friend.
The point of the film is a little muddied and though the conflict is crystal clear and the consequences laid out in plain english, the movie doesn't bring much else to the table in terms of choices and resolutions and bringing things full circle, as well as paying off the ugly premise.
Because of that, it lacks the substance it could have easily bled. The performances are stellar and Farino's direction is very grounded, giving us great timing and allowing the actors to really punch up the script.
But, all in all, kind of forgettable.
