Review of The Open House (2018) by Danny D — 06 Feb 2018
The shots were amazing, the suspense thrilling, and the jump scares well executed. This movie was very vision centric, focusing on setting atmosphere and storytelling mainly through this aspect. Could be very disorienting at times, which was a bit of genius.
The directing and acting was A+. The characters, dialogue, and storyline however, I found to be pretty lacking. Some development here and there but with little purpose. The framing of the plot almost seemed.
..directionless. I found myself very disappointed at the end, being left with little to no explanation for any of the events that transpired since they arrived at the mountain house. It feels as if they sort of forgot that the stalker was supposed to be an antagonist, and therefore an actual character.
Instead he was used merely as a tool to make viewers piss themselves. Which I guess is alright, it definitely worked. But there was absolutely no development, or even explanation offered for any aspect of his character.
All in all, this movie is worth the watch if you're looking for a beautifully shot movie or a really good scare, which of course is very important in a horror film. But if you're looking for a movie with substance, look elsewhere.
