Review of The Open House (2018) by Christopher B — 30 Jan 2018
Oh Netflix, here we are again. Although this time you throw your star boy into a cold little horror game. Okay, I'll bite.
Fairly decent character buildup to begin, you meet the family, the scenario is set and away you go. After a tragedy, the remaining mother and son go to try sell their sister's house? Okay then... Oh, and everyone they meet is slightly over the top pushy/creepy/intrusive? Hmm...
My problem is length here. You set up well, you begin to tease goings-on and just as we're starting to wonder who it is that's messing with them, you decide to screw it and wipe the slate, thus cheating.
There are very few characters built upon where you might've been able to give a more substantial lead away from the typical generic psycho in the house malarchy but you fail to breath life into them other than to say "oh she's nuts and the town is odd". This feels like a waste of time to even incorporate these people.
Overall it's a palpable tale with a lackluster ending.
Could be better.
