Review of The Onion Movie (2008) by Nathan H — 24 May 2009
"The Onion" is a great book/magazine/newspaper to have in your bathroom or on your coffee table: pointed satire, sharp writing, topical, and timely. But as a movie--a series of sketches which essentially re-create various "Onion" articles--it fails miserably. I wasn't sure what to expect with this film, but from the quality of the print publication, I was hoping that it would have something to say, and that it would be smart. Instead, it feels like a second-rate sketch comedy, somewhere far below "SNL" and just above "Mad TV.".
Watching an episode of "The Daily Show" is a much better use of your time than watching this film. Highly disappointing, though a handful of sketches (the Britney Spears parody videos, "Shoot Love Over My Face," was pretty funny) hit the mark. The production quality is pretty poor, as well.
