Review of The Ones Below (2016) by Brandon W — 14 Nov 2016
The Ones Below is the directorial debut of David Farr, and it stars Clémence Poésy, David Morrissey, Stephen Campbell Moore, and Laura Bin in a British thriller about a husband and wife that's expecting a baby to come in, and so is the new neighbors too that they were starting to become friends with.
When they invited them, they had a good time until afterwards when the neighbor's wife had an accident and lost the baby which they blamed the problem on them, and it gets more suspicious when it keeps going.
I found out about this on Flixster when this has good reviews for this movie, and it looked interesting to me. So when I watched it on Netflix, it's more interesting than I thought was going to be.
The acting is pretty great, and David Morrissey and Laura Bin did a great job of acting vaguely creepy that you're not quite sure about whether you trust them, or is just their tradition going on.
The movie cleverly sets up what is going on that keeps you interested until you realize in the end. It's well-made, which is a surprise as it's from a first-time director that only does theater, but it looks like he has done this before.
The writing is well-written, although it lead to a twist that I saw coming, until the end comes in and just come out of nowhere and surprised me more, even though I'm confused about if it's been done before of the situation that just happened.
The characters are well developed, and was effectively creepy, although not creeping down your spine kind of creepy. The Ones Below is a great film that is a nice first feature from David Farr.
