Review of The Omen (1976) by Conner . — 23 Jul 2010
I know I'll receive criticism for this review, but just hear me out. I may not have liked it just because I'm not a fan of the whole possessed/evil child movies (Ex: The Exorcist, Orphan, Godsend, etc.). It could also be due to the fact I've seen various movies built off the idea of The Omen, so I'm probably sick of it. I should have watched this movie first before all the other similar movies. However, I still have to assess it.
One thing that bothered me about The Omen was that it delivered not too many scares. There were few times where the movie tries to scare the audience. The majority of the film focuses around Gregory Peck and David Warner trying to uncover the truth surrounding Peck's son Damien. My other complaint about this film is the way it revolved around Damien, but how little he actually appeared on screen. I feel that with as big of a role his character played in the film he should have appeared onscreen more often. I also did not capture his wickedness as much as I felt I should. To me it appeared that what Damien did was not at all his fault and he was oblivious to everything going on. It almost appeared that what he did was always on accident, but for all I know it may have been supposed to be that way.
I believe The Omen is decent, but does not live up to its hype. I feel you should still watch it due to the fact it's considered a horror classic, besides you might even like it!
4/10.
