It was made during the heyday of brilliant, cutting-edge horror movies... but this was an exceptionally bad one. It's effectively scary and well made in parts, but It's so cliched and over-the-top, you find yourself laughing when you should be screaming.
It's really predicable. The standard for Devil movies was set with The Exorcist, and has never been matched since.
