Review of The Omega Man (1971) by Skyler I — 23 Jun 2011
This film deserves credit for being engaging and mildly entertaining, but it's very unfaithful to the novel it's based upon, something that I found endlessly frustrating. The book is about a disease that basically turns people into vampires.
In the movie, the disease turns them into well-spoken and fascist cultists. Wait, what? How the hell does that work? One thing I did find interesting was the films habit of comparing protagonist Neville to Jesus Christ.
A little girl asks him if he is God, and another character says that Neville is helping them find a new Garden of Eden. (Spoiler Alert) Last but not least, Neville is hit in the chest with a spear while defending the last hope of humanity, dying in a position reminiscient of a crucified Christ.
Interesting, to say the least.
