This movie had it's ups and downs. compared to "The Last Man on Earth", which was released about 9 years sooner, this movie almost did right by the book. One of the downsides to this film is that fact that it was basically turned into an "interracial love is okay" sort of thing, but with all that was going on at that time and age.
....it's still no excuse.
