Review of The Omega Man (1971) by Nathan M — 23 Jan 2014
Pretty well made and interesting because of its 1970s trappings and character motivations that complement those of the book. The villains in this film are portrayed as an infected cult of opponents of the military-industrial complex, rather than the growling beasts of the Will Smith version.
Their desire to kill Neville, stems from both the fact that he slaughters a massive number of the infected and because he represents what they see as the evils of the prior world that brought destruction upon mankind.
The film has cool looking 1970s production design, as well as shots of a shiny 1970s Los Angeles, with new freeways (I-210) and towers (City National Plaza) being built. Charlton Heston has a knack for appearing in films whose premise and story fascinate the viewer more than his character/performance.
Soylent Green and Planet of the Apes are two other examples. (13 October 2012).
