Review of The Object of My Affection (1998) by Jack C — 22 Nov 2009
I love Paul Rudd. No argument, no question, I love the guy. If he asked me to follow him to Afghanistan to fight on the front lines in Fallujah, I would. If he released an instructional DVD of how to open cans, I'd buy the collector's edition.
He's a great actor, he has impeccable comic timing and from what I've seen/read about him off-screen, he's utterly charming. In "The Object Of My Affection" he plays a gay man. Jennifer Aniston plays his straight roommate.
She falls in love with him. Thus begins this ultra-hip, very 90s romantic comedy drama. It's very upfront about a lot of the relationships that happen in the film and at points it has its head firmly stuck in the drama clouds.
The script is at times a little clunky, a little community theatre (10 points for the reference) but overall the film works thanks to the great performances. Rudd and Aniston are great together and individually.
They have ample support from the awesome Alan Alda and a great turn from Nigel Hawthorne as the older gay gentleman dealing out advice like a New York playwright version of Gandalf. The film is most definitely a product of its time and doesn't date particularly well, but I thought the performances were very good and by the end of the film I was thoroughly satisfied with everything.
Good police this one, good police.
