Review of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018) by Kenneth W — 02 Nov 2018
A Wizard of OZ, girl-on-a-journey movie. Dazzling story world and music score. Maybe tried to cram too much storyline in not enough into the motivations and interpersonal relationships of the characters. I found myself kind of caring for them, but not like I cared for Wizard of OZ's Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion.
Was it one of those scripts that was great at first, but over-tweaked by too many studio executives, or was it just not fleshed out well from the beginning? Someone should have given the story over to the PIXAR group for about a year and let them work their emotional magic.
Still, my wife and I liked the movie and might go see it again with more of the family. I would go back just to see the young actor, Makenzie Foy (Clara). She is delightful. Who knows, it may be one of those Disney movies that will grow on me as BRAVE did.
