RT clearly didn't research before reviewing. It never promised to be an exact retelling of the story nor to be in a classic ballet format. I am a die hard Nutcracker fan and was completely ok with this interpretation.
The use of Tchaikovsky's music to highlight certain themes was appropriate and their use of firshadowing between the two acts mimicked how the ballet is choreographed. Go back and research Tchaikovsky and the ballet more and this movie will make sense.
?? they got the time period right and most ballet companies don't even do that. Everyone takes creative liberties and that makes this version even more valid.
