Review of The Nun (2018) by Ari D — 06 Sep 2018
The Nun is a dark and twisted horror movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat and looking away all at the same time. Treat yourself to a weekend of biting your fingernails in a dark room of strangers as New Line Cinema reminds you of the terrors in the dark.
As part of the Conjuring Universe, this movie can be enjoyed completely independent of the others in the series. For those of you who are horror masterminds this film does have ties with the other movies in the series, some are shown blatantly and some that will be discovered throughout.
The story follows a Priest and young Nun who are sent to a 'Nunnery' in Romania (1952) to investigate the suicide of one of their Nuns. The Priest is supposed to be investigating if the grounds are still holy, and from the opening seconds of the movie it is clear that something unholy is going on.
Directed by Corin Hardy, this being his second feature film, he does wonderful work with the cinematics and the sound is brilliant. The movie has a wonderful blend of reality and spirituality that will haunt the dreams of the light hearted. Simply looking at the face of The Nun is enough to give someone the creeps, and this movie is all too happy to give its viewers the creeps.
Horror is a genre that has a tremendous fan-base and they will be excited, thrilled and terrified of this installment. However, it is also a genre that allows great creative liberties to the extent that the story is usually very weak while makeup and special effects garner the most attention. The Nun gets 3 stars for not giving up too much on a story and keeping continuity throughout while providing a great scare for those daring enough to watch in a dark theater of strangers.
