Review of The Nun (2018) by Joe B — 12 Sep 2018
Disappointing after a string of four stellar releases in the Conjuring series. It's not just the historical inaccuracies, but the lack of any real character development (which was crucial in previous installments), the screenplay that had no real plot, the sometimes poor acting, and the way over-the-top approach to the subject matter that makes this film feel more like an entry from the late 1980s than something James Wan would ever do.
Shame because the potential was there, and there are some good scares at the end, but by that point, the demon has been overdeveloped to have Sith Lord like powers that it really makes no sense that it doesn't easily win the day.
And of course, the "twist" ending is contradicted by other entries in this series which demonstrate the rules of possession. Instead, the director went for cliches and the cartoonish approach of Supernatural instead of an actual script with subtlety and restraint.
