Review of The Nun (2018) by Authenticreview — 11 Sep 2018
I went to see this film incredibly excited for what was to come however unfortunately however it was another poorly written and lazily edited popcorn film. I as a a viewer and a critic am a huge fan of the conjuring films I thought that the first two films were incredible and I loved Valek as the villain in the conjuring sequel and she was in fact the only horror villain that has truly stuck with me after I left the theater.
Unfortunately the same thing did not happen to me after this film. Lets start with the pros: the opening scene was probably the best scene in the entirety of the film in that it established the atmosphere perfectly and gave you a taste of the experience you were in for.
The atmosphere of this film I will admit was perfect in that it set the perfect tone in that you felt that you were not supposed to be watching this film or that you were almost getting pulled right into this horrific castle.
I also found that a great contributor to the tone of the film was the constant worshiping cry's every time there would be a pan around the castle or and establishing shot or to simply establish tension.
The characters were fairly enjoyable and you did eventually grow to enjoy there company. Now the pros: For a film titled the nun you would think that you would see a lot more of her. I could probably count the number of times I saw her with one hand.
The fear factor by the end of the film was totally lost probably due to the over use of cliched apparitions for cheap jump scares. Valek was not used to her full potential as well. I find that the villain Valek is best used in an isolated setting when the audience is forced to look at her menacing stature.
For example many times in the sequel to the conjuring you saw her in a long shot of an eerie hallway or maybe when you were forced to look at her through a window (frame in a frame) unfortunately the only time in which you saw her like that in this film was in the opening scene.
There were quite a few flaws in this film however that does not mean you should not still go and see it. If you are a conjuring fan and in particular a fan of Valek this is definitely something for you, all I ask is that you dont go in with high hopes.
