Review of The Number 23 (2007) by Brad B — 23 Jun 2010
After seeing this psychological thriller, I have noticed the number 23 everywhere! Of course, I'm not obsessed like Jim Carrey is in this film. I have to say that I laughed when I heard Jim Carrey was in this movie. I know he has been in some dramatic roles but not any horror ones. I am pleasantly surprised though. He plays his part very well! He is believable and you can see a mental breakdown about to happen. The other actors are ok but Jim Carrey's wife in this movie stands out in the wrong way. I just didn't find her acting believable.
The plot may seem stupid but it is actually pretty smart. There is a twist at the end that I did not see coming and it actually MADE SENSE! This film explained everything at the end and that was very satisfying.
Something I found very annoying about this movie were the random and unneeded sex scenes. They were graphic and numerous to the point of being ridiculous. Also the scenes that played out what Jim Carrey was reading from his book were very strange. Sometimes they were cool, other times they were stupid. Also the length of this film is too long. In the middle of the film, I found myself losing interest very fast but then it sped up and kept my interest.
Overall, this is a smart and satisfying psychological thriller that Jim Carrey shows his acting chops in. The story is smart and it makes sense. But the over occurring sex scenes, the unneeded cut scenes, and the length of this film made this a pretty good thriller.
