Review of The Number 23 (2007) by Daniel H — 12 Dec 2013
I'm not sure if I liked this movie or not yet, as a movie it's pretty silly, weak, over the top and self-indulgent tripe but if I look past it and just look at the story and movie by itself (somehow.
I don't expect everyone to understand my reasoning) it wasn't half bad for a concept as out-there as this was. I guess what Im saying is, its a stupid idea but for a stupid idea its fine. The whole thing sounds preposterous but it works relatively okay.
The start of the movie seems pretty normal, it's got some comedic lines thrown in with some silly antics with a dog (am I watching Bruce Almighty here) but it very quickly descends into madness. The theme at the start with voice overs seems very intriguing but then disappears and doesn't come back till literally the last five minutes.
I love a good potboiler and this didnt disappoint but there's just something I can't put my finger on that doesn't seem to come all together, perhaps it was the final act, perhaps it was the twists but I don't know.
Speaking of the final act I wasn't disappointed but I wasn't really happy either, I had better ideas that I thought up as I was watching this and none of that happened and it had its own jumbled ending that made my brain fry.
I'm aware this review is all over the place but that's how this movie left me, I'm in two minds about it. The style in the scenes from the book were great and the music sounded lovely. Besides getting a razzie nomination I think Jim Carrey did pretty good in this, its so strange to see him be serious.
I liked the supporting cast too. On one hand it thinks its more important than it is but on the other hand, for what it was it was great. I can see why it got 8% though...
