The most heart-wrenching conflict underlining this emotional story about the advent of the AIDS crisis is the conflict between safety and freedom. The liberation of sexual freedom exercised by the homosexual community, despite the devastating risks that Ryan Murphy's HBO film unflinchingly depicts, is too valuable to lose.
It is what pushes protagonist Ned Weeks (Mark Ruffalo) over the limit, as he struggles to expose the AIDS epidemic to the public. It is what gives "The Normal Heart" its emotional edge, collaborating with its honest portrayal of the conflict of giving in versus speaking out, and holding on versus letting go.
