Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Alvar B — 19 Aug 2009
For the first hour I was hooked and really enjoying this film. Depp's rare book collecting heartless sceptic mercenary character holds the film up well, and the plot about three very rare books of which one or more may be fake is brilliantly done.
Sadly it's also a film that gets progressively sillier. During the last half hour it becomes very hard to keep a straight face as the film seems to become a farce. And then when Depp has sex with some mental woman (who can also fly) next to a burning castle which isn't burning the next day I'd lost all interest.
