Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Mark M — 20 Sep 2009
Quite an intriguing piece of work by Roman Polanski. Depp takes his role quite well as a book investigator, hunting for clues about the mysterious ninth gate. Everyone is attracted to mysterious facts, so regardless if the movie is good or bad, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, anxious to find the secrets of what our anti-hero's looking for.
However, the plot is slowpaced, and the ending is not really explained, which sometimes is good because it leads the viewer to think about ultimate meanings, but just not in this case, because the clues Polanski provided are extremely very hard to find unless you know the mysteries of the gates and read a lot about them.
By the way....Polanski and Anton Lavey (creator of the church of Satan) were friends, and rumors state that Lavey was technical advisor on the set of Rosmary's baby .....FREAKY !!!
