Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Ellie D — 31 Mar 2012
Now it's just a feeble memory.
BORING!
The Story: A book dealer is sent around the world to authenticate a rare book that holds the key to resurrecting Satan. That's about it... It's semi-stylish in a moody way, the cinematography is good, but the story goes pretty much nowhere. It's just Johnny Depp asking a bunch of questions about some dusty old books. This film could have been immersive and deep, instead it feels shallow and meaningless.
The Cast: Johnny Depp... He's all you really need to know here... Playing the part of Dean Corso, he is truly mediocrity personified. He has a few good moments of quality acting, but they're just that... FEW... Maybe it's the boring story, maybe it's a boring script, maybe it's just a boring character, or maybe it's just bad acting. I'd be content with a consistent level of above par acting, but to sit through 133 minutes of this is almost agonizing... It won't hit you at first, in fact at first you'll be all like, "Depp really does have some talent." but about a quarter of the way through you'll be tired of him...
One to Five Scale: 2.
Unless you're one of those Johnny Depp junkies that will eat up his every word because he really is a "good" actor, but really because he makes a hot pirate, than you should steer clear of this film.
Tyler.
