Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Brian C — 03 Nov 2012
After reading so many opposing reviews of The Ninth Gate, I approached it with apprehension but enjoyed it nonetheless. Yes it is slow moving, and builds more on character development than suspense, but there is enough than when looking at the movie as a whole, really is quite good.
Depp is excellent, and Emmanuelle Seigner is amazing. In fact, every scene she was in was great. The concept of the 3 books with differing pictures inside needing to be assembled properly together as a grand puzzle was very well done.
The ending was rather ambiguous, but only to raise speculation. My own interpretation might not be the same as others, but it works for me, and I am quite happy with that. Polanski delivers much with beautiful cinematography, great sets, and a soundtrack that is perfect.
