Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Jason L — 03 Aug 2013
The ninth gate is a tight little europeon mystery where no-one is what they seem and where you can't trust anyone, not even your own eyes sometimes. A forgotten film amongst Johnny Depp's and roman polanksi's long list of films, for me the nineth gate is a Johnny Depp staple if you are a fan of his.
He play the despicable Dean Corso (who you still can't help but love) as he is hired to seek out and authenticate the three books of the 'nine gates to the kingdom of shadows' by and even nastier Boris Balkin (played oh so nastily by Frank Langella).
There are twists and turns and a score by Wojciech Kilar that will take your breath away. Though it may be a small gem in the crown of Polanski and Depp, it is a bright and precious gem.
