Review of The Nines (2007) by Brandon S — 27 Jun 2008
What starts out as a fascinating metaphysical clue hunt/suspense thriller unfortunately overblows itself in the final act of the movie, making the jump from one metaphysical postulation to one entirely too vast for its own good, trying to give us answers where it should be asking questions, and in the answers it gives merely talking in pointless riddles with no seeming rhyme nor reason.
It quickly goes downhill form there, dragging on at least twenty minutes past where it should have ended and featuring a sappy ending that feels like it belongs in a different movie than where it started.
Ryan Reynolds is fascinating in the role, and some of the questions raised and issues explored warrant a viewing or two if this kind of movie floats your boat, but otherwise it's a fairly disposable film.
