Review of The Nines (2007) by Adam G — 26 Jan 2009
This is the very rare occasion where the subtext is far more intriguing than what's actually on screen. August has done something more complex than the obvious "mind-trip" David Lynch-lite narrative, crafting a story that's moving as a commentary on the act of creating itself.
A bold story about the power of being a writer/artist/creator and and insanity of that situation, "The Nines" tries to trick us into believing that it's a routine thriller with various red-herring throughout.
In the end, August is sharing with us the joy and insanity of building worlds, and just how very addictive that power could be. "If God is a 10 and humans are 7, you're a 9..." Arrogant, but also brave.
