Review of The Nines (2007) by George B — 21 Feb 2012
I was actually just introduced to this movie about three weeks ago by a friend of mine, and I have to say it was probably one of the best movie recommendations I have ever been given. Just the concept of the movie is awesome, tapping into that feeling that everyone gets at one time or another in their lives that something is just "off" with the world around them.
How the story was laid out into three different "parts" was great, but the way that they fold all together into one plot towards the end of the movie was done superbly. A bit of of a mind twister, one has to pay close attention to certain details in all three parts in order to fully grasp the concept of what John August was trying to show and convey though the movie.
Ryan Reynolds, in my opinion, gives his best performance to date by incorporating his comedic and serious acting skills into the three different versions of his character. A great surprise to me was Melissa McCarthy's performance, which in the beginning I was not excited for since I had never seen her act and only knew that she had been on Gilmore Girls.
She was incredible in giving hints throughout that she always knew a little more then she was letting on, but at the same time keeping true to the character she was playing in the different parts of the film.
The Nines for me has become one of my all time favorite movies in all aspects (acting, story, direction, and score) and has become one of those films that I can watch anytime, anywhere and enjoy it just as much as I had viewing the film the first time.
