Review of The Nines (2007) by Katiedoesnt — 23 Jan 2009
This is a must-watch movie. It's a philospohical mind-trip that becomes more and more bizarre as the movie progresses. Ryan Reynolds is not normally someone you'd think could pull off a serious role, but he does so surprisingly well. In fact, the whole cast is perfect and I wouldn't substitute any of them. The movie deals with concepts such as: the fabric of reality, what it is to be human, simulated reality, the evoloution of consciousness, destiny, love, deception, identity crisis, psychosis, the meaning of life, enlightenment, buddhist philosophy, and several other very deep subjects.
This is a movie to be enjoyed several times, since you probably won't understand it the first time. It becomes apparent, upon subsequent viewings, that there are deep questions being asked to the viewer thoughout the movie. What is reality? How does one know that they themselves are not God? Would God purposely pose as a human and erase all memory of being God in order to experience an escape from divinity? Are we living in a computer simulation of the past? Could someone be so addicted to a video game that they mistaken it for reality?
If any of these questions intrigue you, then I encourage you to watch this movie. 5 stars.
