Review of The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) by Ayesha D — 16 Oct 2012
I loved this film, (and I'm not just biased because I grew up with it as a kid, honest.).
The stop-frame animation is beautiful, the models are delicate, detailed and original. The storyline is moving and thought-provoking. It creates a dream-world both thrilling and terrifying and portrays a real and rare depth of emotion from the main character, Jack, as he grasps at a ill-fitting dream to cure life's day-to-day monotony. As in so many great stories, it is the protagonist's flaw which causes Jack's downfall and betrays something akin to arrogance within his personality. It makes him, and the storyline real and believable (to an extent of course).
Add all of that to some simply beautiful music, wonderful voice acting and a colourful array of background characters, each with their own stories, and that is what makes this film not only one of my favourites, but also one of the greatest animated movies ever.
