Charles Laughton's only directorial effort and it's a knockout. Iconic performance from Robert Mitchum. Silent screen star Gish is good, too. Shelley Winters' underwater sequence is stunningly, startlingly and hauntingly beautiful.
"Pearl" is played by child actor Sally Jane Bruce, and she has the biggest head I have ever seen on a child. No kidding, it's huge.
