This film was pure geniouse, and Laughton's direction was nothing more than sheer brilliance. For being the only film he directed, he really hit a home run. Mitchum's performance as the supposid preacher, who is a greedy psychopath is terrific.

The whole cast is excellent, including Gish, as the religous women who takes in homeless kids. What I like about this film, not only the direction, and performances, but it's spirituality. This film may take a while warming up to, if your going in expecting a solid suspence/thriller.

It is much more than that. It has countless genres all rolled into one. The film brilliantly focuses on the subject of good and evil, and while it shows evil in the chase scene, it also captures innocense during the well constructed dream seaquence.

This is really something to see.
