Review of The Night of the Hunter (1955) by Jason W — 06 May 2009
The battle of good and evil and the abuse of faith. Mitchum is great as a psychotic "preacher". He's an intoxicating man and even those who realize his evil nature are sometimes sucked into his aura.
A preacher as a villain is always one of the most sinister characters because he will automatically prey on people who trust him. Pretty dark material that today would likely be made with blood and gore instead of atmosphere to get the scares out.
It's just as effective this way.
