There are two main reasons to watch this (and I do recommend it).
The cinematography and use of lighting and shadows are fantastic, creating some truly memorable images, especially silhouettes of Harry Powell, and shockingly the underwater scene (trying not to spoil).
Robert Mitchum is amazing as the psychotic Harry Powell, a charming and charismatic killer who preys on widows and God-fearing folks eager to hear his words of consolation. The frequent use of his wonderful bass voice singing 'Leaning... Leaning..." brings chills to any number of scenes. He is a constant menace and source of threat, even when he's off screen. Like 'those guys' in Butch Cassidy and The Terminator, you never sense that he's beaten.
